She was born July 22, 1933 in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from Sunset High School in 1950, she graduated from Methodist Hospital of Dallas School of Nursing and was licensed as a Registered Nurse in 1954. While attending nursing school she met her lifelong love, Dr. William J. Halden, whom she married on October 23, 1954.
After residing in Midland, Texas, Martha and Bill made Austin their home in 1957 and for almost 60 years she proudly devoted her life to supporting her husband and his pediatric practice and their four children through her meticulous homemaking. A devout Christian, she and Bill were dedicated members of St. Austin Catholic Church for many years, and later in her life regularly attended Chapel Services at Seton Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband Bill; her children William J. Halden, Jr. (Jennifer), Sue Albe, Danny Halden (Joyce), and Mary Beth Sherman (David); grandchildren Nicholas, Virginia, and Derek Halden; Timothy and Kara Albe; Julie (Nathan) Webb, Jina (Travis) Waddell, and Daniel Halden, Jr.; and, Shelby and Katie-Scarlett Sherman; great-grandchildren David and Chase Webb; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Halden and Connie Gouger; nieces and nephews Ric Halden, Diane Provenza, Lisa Griffith, Rebecca Lusher, Timothy Halden, Michael Halden, Jacquelyn Herron, John Roddy, Jr., Stanley Gouger, Jr., and Pam Gouger. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Nona Gouger, and her two siblings, Stanley Gouger and Margaret Roddy.
Visitation will begin at 5:00pm followed by a Rosary at 6:00pm on Sunday, August 24th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Austin Catholic Church, 2026 Guadalupe St., Austin, Texas, on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 1 pm; interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Dell Children's Hospital, Capital Area Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
