Age 95, passed away peacefully, on December 11. She was born in Florence County, South Carolina on April 7, 1916 to William Benjamin Rollins and Pearl Lyles Rollins.
She grew up in a large family during the depression in Florence, South Carolina. With no money, but plenty of pluck, she went to the University of South Carolina(USC) by persuading the school treasurer to enroll her and let her pay for her tuition by doing secretarial work. While at USC, she met her husband Fred who was also studying journalism. In 1947, she and Fred moved to Scenic Drive in Austin, Texas where she lived until 2003. During most of the years in Austin, she worked for State Senator Charles Herring where she managed his many campaigns and his office. Her legislative work and other related responsibilities resulted in weekend work so often that she was given a set of keys to the capitol building. Although she treasured the many friends she made in Austin, in 2003 she moved to the Presbyterian Village North (PVN) retirement community in Dallas to be closer to family members. There she met many more friends, served on the PVN board, actively maintained her flower garden, and enjoyed participating in many activities at PVN. She always appreciated the courteous and professional PVN staff.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Fred who passed July 17, 1992. She is survived by her three children: Rick Williams and his wife Janet of Garland, TX; Louisa Williams of San Rafael, CA; and Betsy Williams of Golden, CO; three grandchildren: Damon Williams, Jeremy Williams and his wife Kate, and Mike Williams; two sisters: Jean Cooke of Dalton, GA and Martha Dusenbury of West Columbia, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend to many, and she will be missed.
The Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive.
