Margaret McGavern

Margaret Natalie McGavern, 91, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Born in Holland TX on Flag Day, June 14, 1922, she was a resident of Austin for over 60 years.

Margaret came to Austin in October, 1940 and started her business education at Nixon-Clay College. In January, 1943, she met the love of her life and married Lewis Merle(“Mac") McGavern who was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas with the 89th Troop Carrier Division. Margaret was a lifelong member of St. Austin’s Catholic Church, where she was active in many organizations and church activities. Her favorite was the Bible Study Group. Margaret was very interested in geneaology and always looked forward to her family reunions, and her family trips by car across the country. Margaret spent 27 years working as Executive Secretary to the Human Resources director of the Austin State School prior to her retirement in 1987. Margaret will be remembered for her warm smile, sense of humor, the love she gave so easily, her devotion to her family and to our loving Lord.

Margaret is survived by her children; sons, Jim Lewis McGavern of Friendswood, Texas, Bill Douglas McGavern of Austin, Texas; daughter, Dr. Maureen Lynn McGavern of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughters Megan Lynn Nawrot (“Luke”) of Houston, and Melissa Paige McGavern of Austin; and grandson, Matthew Douglas McGavern of Austin, Texas. Also, she is survived by the new great-granddaughters of Megan Nawrot; Olivia Grace, Annabelle Faith and Adeleine Hope.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Merle(“Mac”) McGavern in 2002; mother, Tillie Augustus Woytek in 1990; father, Jim Woytek, and brother, Raymond Woytek.

Visitation for Margaret will be from five-thirty until eight o’clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 21st of May, 2014 with a Rosary recited at six o’clock at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin, Texas 78752.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Margaret at eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 22nd of May, 2014 at St. Austin Catholic Church, 2026 Guadalupe Street, Austin, Texas 78705. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery.
