Kenneth Richard Sandberg was born on July 9, 1925 in Austin, Texas and passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024 surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Elfrieda Sandberg, brother Harry and wife Dorothy Sandberg, and sister Amy Jean Kinane. He is survived by his children: Kenneth Sandberg Jr and wife Janice, Lynne Marie Lingo, Karol Anne Boes and husband Douglas, Susan Kay Sandberg, and Barbara Jane Farris. His eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Stephen Sandberg and wife Jill, Carl Sandberg and wife Emily, Shawn Lingo, Clayton Lingo, Adam Farris and wife Chelsea, Josh Farris and wife Nikki, Andrew Boes and wife Casey, and Garrett Boes. In addition, he was blessed with 11 great grandchildren.
He was a proud Veteran of the Army Air Corps in WWII (bomber pilot), a graduate of the University of Texas in Civil Engineering in 1951, a life member of the Texas Exes Alumni association (a season ticket holder for more Longhorn teams than he could count), and a member of the UT Longhorn Band and the Longhorn Alumni Band, serving as Alumni Band President 1971-1972. He later played in the New Horizons Band of Austin for many years, where he was known for his beaming smile and the gusto in which he played the tuba part for “Texas Fight”. He served the community in many ways, most notably through The Kiwanis Club of Northwest Austin. An avid deer hunter, Ken shared his passion and most fall weekends in the Texas Hill Country with his friends, children, and grandsons. He worked for the Texas Highway Department in the Materials and Test Division for 44 years, where he focused on bridge design and construction. The iconic Pennybacker Bridge over Lake Austin was one of his last projects.
The family would like to thank his caregivers for their wonderful care and compassion during the last part of his life. Visitation will be Sunday, May 19, 4–6pm at Weed Corley Fish on Parkcrest Drive. The family will have a private burial at Oakwood Annex Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, May 20th at 10:30 am at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Boulevard, where he was an active member for over 70 years. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to honor Ken at Tarrytown UMC Children’s Ministries (he loved bringing cookies for the children on Sunday mornings in Perry Hall), New Horizons Band (PO Box 50435, ATX 78763-0435), UT “Back the Band” (giving.utexas.edu), or the charity of your choice.
