I had the opportunity to meet Judy when I sat with Doug and her at John and Suzanne’s wedding reception. I really enjoyed getting to meet her and remember thinking she and Doug seemed so good together. She was friendly, witty, and really welcoming to me on that occasion. One thing I can say about Judy; she did not suffer fools (or otherwise bad opera) gladly. My wife, the Gullicksons and I went to an opera on the UT campus that had us disgusted literally from the overture.  At intermission Judy and I looked at each other in horror and disgust, exiting the first chance we got.  From one of the ushers: “Oh, but it’s not over”.  Yes, in fact, it was.
 Her taste in music and opera was of the highest caliber.  Because turn-tables had basically become obsolete, she was no longer able to hear the music she grew up with .  Her husband and I conspired to digitize her parents’ entire classical catalog, some 40 or so platters, removing pops and scratches, and sequencing acts together that had sometimes continued across multiple platters.  Her overwhelming gratitude gave me the impression I had given her back a piece of her childhood she had thought she would never hear again.  She got some of her fondest childhood memories restored.  As a consequence, I got one of the best digitized catalogs of classical opera imaginable.  Some of the earliest Metropolitan Opera ever recorded.  That’s how I will remember Judy.  Generous, creatively discriminating and a dedicated friend.  One thing you can say about Judy Streett, she did not need assertiveness training. We will miss her.

Judy and I were best friends almost from the moment we met, which was at the beginning of our first year at Southwestern. Our lives have been so entwined, I don’t know who I would have become without her. I would never have known her wonderful family or her friends at Texas Wesleyan, and if we hadn’t gone to England together, I wouldn’t have decided to move to Seattle. I influenced her as well. I was the one who suggested she leave Fort Worth and come to Austin, where she lived for 48 years. In the beginning we shared an apartment, and we became founding members of the Austin Guitar Society and volunteered for various—and often losing—political campaigns. For Judy demonstrating and protesting became a civic duty.  

She loved to travel and was especially interested in gardens and art. The trips we took together were also occasions for music, ballet and theater. Judy had dry sense of humor and was a master of satire and—when she felt it was called for—withering sarcasm. She was a well-read, well-informed person of integrity and intellect, and my irreplaceable friend. 


On January 21, 2017 Judy and I joined other like-minded folks on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol to show our support for Planned Parenthood.  It was her idea to do so and I was honored to join her there.  Judy was both complex and quiet, so I didn’t always know what was on her mind.  But that day the goal was clear, and it was fun to be on the same page with such a large group of folks.
