Dr. Spencer was a Texas resident all his life. He graduated from Stratford High School in Houston, TX and then went to Austin and graduated from UT with a B.A. in biology in July of 1989. He was accepted right after graduation to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio with his medical doctor license in 1993. He always said “I’m free in “93”. John proposed to Renee Farwell and they married in Las Vegas on June 1st 1995. They both moved to Austin and John enrolled in the Austin Psychiatric Residency Program at the Austin State Hospital under Dr. Sutton. He completed the residency program in 1997. He started working at the Austin Travis County MHMR for years before starting a private practice in 2000, where he and his wife worked in N.W. Austin and helped many people/patients. He was a member of the Texas Medical Association, Travis County Medical Society, and American Psychiatric Association and the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians. He also did part-time work as a sub investigator at Community Clinical Research.
He was predeceased by his beloved Pokey, and grandparents. John is survived by his wife Renee, her sister Robynn, husband Jonathan and their children Jadynn and Jonathan Jr., her brother’s Rick and Rich, her father Richard and step-mom Karen and grandmother Hazel, of Florida; members on his side of the family, sister’s Karen Renee and Kim Cheri, nieces Sabree Rain, and Haley, also his mother Kathleen and father John Sr. from Houston, Texas.
He was loved by many people, co-workers, family and patients. He loved the outdoors, boating, his dogs and especially his motorcycles.
A private service will be at West Beach Marine.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to NAMI (The National Alliance on Mental Health) www.nami.org which he was extremely compassionate about and wanted more awareness for the mentally ill.
