The family relocated to Austin where he grew up as the oldest of six children. He attended Holy Cross Catholic school as a youth and graduated from L.C. Anderson High School in 1950. He served in the US Army from 1950-1952. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he enrolled at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas and was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the institution with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. John served the community working in various industries including real estate and insurance, working as a guidance counselor with Gary Job Corps, as well as owning a gas station in East Austin. He retired from the Texas Comptroller’s Office in 1992. Upon retirement he served for a few years as a substitute teacher with the Austin Independent School District.
John met Gloria Ann Coleman while she attended Huston-Tillotson College, and their immediate connection blossomed into a lifelong partnership when they were united in Holy Matrimony on June 4, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Port Arthur, Texas. Two children were born to this union, Carol and John (Jack), whom he loved dearly with his whole heart.
At an early age John accepted Christ, being baptized at Holy Cross Catholic Church where he was a lifelong member. He served the church over the years as a member and President of the Parish Council, a lector during mass, and most recently as a member and Treasurer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society assisting those in need. He had the honor of speaking at the 75th Anniversary of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a testament to his deep connection with the church community. He and Gloria took immense pride in raising their children in the parish and witnessing them receive the holy sacraments.
