Jewell S. Shannon passed away on June 28th, 2024, at the age of 93 years old. She was born in Alabama City, Alabama, to Stevie Robert Smith and Jeanette Bell Smith. Being the second oldest daughter in a family of eight children, Jewell was like a second mom to her siblings, raising and loving them along with her dear mother.
Jewell attended high school, where she starred on the co-ed baseball team. She married Fred Tarver in the 1950s and was blessed with two sons, William Tarver and Stephen Tarver, both born in Austin, Texas. Jewell and Fred enlisted in the Air Force in July of 1951, during the Korean War. She proudly served her country as a second-class airman, stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, for 3 years.
Later in life, Jewell met and married the love of her life, Perry L. Shannon, in 1966 in Burnet, Texas. Jewell was blessed with another son through this marriage, Randy Shannon. All three of her sons were her absolute pride and joy! Jewell was survived by her three loving sons, her grandsons, Leonard and Andrew Tarver, and her granddaughter, Adaline Tarver.
A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, July 8th, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Austin, Texas, at 11 a.m. Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. at Oak Grove Church/Cemetery at 7920 Spicewood Springs, Austin, Texas 78759.
