Jerry Lavoy Dixon died Sunday August 2, 2015, following a long struggle with Leukemia. Born February 19, 1944 in Austin, the son of Jerrell D. Dixon and Mary Louise Dixon. Jerry graduated from William B. Travis High School in 1962 and married high school sweetheart Kay Dixon. Jerry and Kay celebrated 52 years of marriage June 14, 2015. Jerry’s 3 favorite things in life were family, cars and camping. His future father-in-law, Roy Milton Eanes, recognized Jerry’s skill for automotive repair and recruited him following high school as a service technician at Covert Buick on 5th and San Antonio Street. Jerry’s unique love of people and cars led to the opening of Jerry Dixon’s Automotive in Oak Hill the fall of 1974. Oak Hill was a thriving community and Jerry was at the heart of it all. The success and love of Jerry allowed him to expand his business into a second location specializing in classic cars, opening in 1985. Jerry put in his last full day of work at his shop Friday July 31, 2015, prior to his passing Sunday, August 2nd.
Jerry’s love of a great adventure and story did not stop at cars. No day passed without a morning visit to the local coffee shop to catch up and share. Swapping stories at The Big Wheel was a daily requirement; following its closure, the crew moved to Jim’s. A fly on the wall would hear stories of great adventures and tall tales to bring smiles on the faces of all his friends. Jerry combined his passion for cars and adventure by purchasing his first cab-over-camper in 1975. This addition to family recreation launched a tradition of family trips, stories and folklore. Jerry’s happiest place on earth was in an RV park camping with all of his family and friends. Nothing made him happier than being behind the wheel of his motorhome leading the way to our next destination with family following behind.
Jerry dearly loved his family, including wife Kay Dixon, his sons Kevin Dixon and wife Teresa, Kelly Dixon and wife Alexandra, and his beloved grandchildren Aaron, Nathaniel, Lucia and Briana. Jerry is also survived by his brothers Erwin Dixon, David Dixon and wife Chris, and Mark Dixon and wife Lisa, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry will be missed by all.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 6, 2015 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Reverend Joseph Calovic officiating. Entombment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park Mausoleum.
