Jean Stewart was born in 1949 to Ralph Edwin and Mary Elizabeth Walker. Her loving family included her husband Jimmy Doyle Stewart (deceased), daughters Amanda Stewart Black (husband Jason) and Allison Stewart Neil (husband Tim); grandsons Owen Black and Samuel Black; sister Susan Enid Walker Coffee (husband John), and brother Douglas Edwin Walker (wife Peggy); nieces and nephews Margaret Coffey, Elizabeth Coffey, David Coffey (wife Emily), Sarah Wolfe (husband Chad), and Adam Kessler (wife Annette); members of the Stewart family, including sister-in-law Jean Stewart (husband Bo, deceased); niece Kimberly Stewart Hudson (husband Christopher); and many great nieces and nephews. She also leaves many close friends who sustained her with their love and friendship, especially Anita Natale, and Becky and Robert Page.
Jean Stewart received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Tulsa, earned her Master’s degree at Sam Houston State University and completed her Doctorate at Baylor University. She met her husband of forty years, Jimmy, at the University of Tulsa. They married in 1971 and moved to Conroe where they raised their two daughters and met many lifelong friends. From outings at the Conroe Country Club to laughing with the Bridge Club, they created a life in Forest Estates that was full of love and happiness. After Jimmy passed, Jean welcomed her two grandsons and traveled the world with dear friends. She was always looking forward to planning the next meal, the next vacation, or the next family gathering.
Jean served the students and educators of CISD during her forty year career, which included teaching special education, working as an educational diagnostician, and school principal of Rice Elementary and Giesinger Elementary. Dr. Stewart then moved to central administration, retiring as the Deputy Superintendent of Schools in 2011. In addition to her work with the school district, Jean served her community on several boards and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. One of the highest honors occurred in 2014 when the CISD Board of Education named an elementary school in her honor, the Jean E. Stewart Elementary School, a reflection of her lifetime commitment to education and the community of Conroe. Jean looked forward to attending the first day of school and the birthday party held in her honor each year at her school.
Above all, Jean’s faith in God guided her and provided strength and peace throughout her life. As a member of First Methodist Conroe she was a Stephen Ministry leader, volunteer with the meal and card ministries, and member of the Methodist Day School Board. She also was a member of Bible Study Fellowship, as well as Bible studies at FMC. After moving to Austin, Jean attended the Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Special thanks to Jean’s close friends, Anita Natale, Becky and Robert Page, and members of BUNCO and RDC friends. Jean’s leadership and legacy of compassion and thoughtfulness were seen throughout her life’s work and in her faithfulness to God.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Methodist Conroe on January 6th, 2025 - visitation at 12:00 pm. followed by the service at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean’s memory can be directed towards First Methodist Conroe, Stephen Ministries, the Methodist Day School, or the American Cancer Society.
