Jan Crain Scott, extraordinary mother, GranJan, sister, and friend was born on March 17, 1951, to Milton and Shirley Crain. Her life ended too soon on January 12, 2023, due to the cruel ravages of colon cancer.
Jan graduated from Westchester High School in Houston and got a degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. Jan married and had two kids, first Alex in 1978 and then Ashley in 1981. She made sure they were well taken care of in every way, including sending them both to the University of Texas at Austin and encouraging them to get degrees to match their passions -- Double Bass Performance for Alex and Studio Art for Ashley. She also stressed practicality and financial independence and ensured they got “day” jobs.
Jan was a loyal employee at FizerBeck for 33 years and two months where she had a loving work family. Her legacy includes teaching others her estate and probate expertise, her "therapy chair," gum stash, can-do attitude, top-notch work ethic, and white chocolate covered pretzels at Christmas time. Through FizerBeck, she would organize and serve dinners for families at Ronald McDonald House and she enjoyed working for the Anne and Don Fizer Foundation.
If you were lucky enough to live on Britoak Lane while she was there, you might know about her "back-to-school" banana bread. Once Ashley and Alex were out of school, she continued her banana bread tradition by taking it to the neighborhood kids at the start of every new school year.
Jan retired at the age of 70 and moved to Austin in December 2021 to be closer to her kids and grandkids. Finding the cutest neighborhood, she quickly made friends out of wonderful neighbors while also staying in contact with close friends and former coworkers. Jan lived for updates about all those she loved.
She was often private, a quiet observer. But when she took an interest in you or you took an interest in her, you got to see exactly how personal, warm, and lovely she could be. Eyes sparkling, she could help you solve all your problems. Walking away from a conversation, you’d feel supported, understood, and loved -- maybe even with a follow-up email or link for her suggested fix.
She might have started a conversation with simple small talk, but she always asked the right questions until she got your entire life story. Jan was truly interested in what makes you tick and what you were trying to accomplish. This loss will be so hard for so many people whose lives she took interest in. She loved to quietly make a difference in your life, and chances are, she loved you.
She is survived by her sister Cheryl Young and brother-in-law Bob Young. She lost her older sister Carolyn Trozzo in December, no doubt giving her the closure she needed to go also. She is survived by her brother-in-law Ernie Trozzo, who it should be noted was so loving to Carolyn. She is also survived by her brother Tom Crain and sister-in-law Mary Crain; honorary brother Jerry Scroggins; her son Alex Scott, his wife Shu-yi, and their children Euna and Lydie; her daughter Ashley Oberholtzer, her husband Chris, and child Shirley Westfall; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
Alex and Ashley would like to thank the teams at Texas Oncology and St. David’s North Austin Medical Center for their compassionate care that began in May 2022.
On January 27th, 2023 at 11 am, there will be a graveside service to inter her ashes at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery; 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, Texas 78731, followed by a come-and-go reception from noon to 2 pm at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home; 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas 78731.
In lieu of flowers or donations: please plan your estate, schedule your regular colonoscopies, and take good care of yourselves and each other.
