Harold was a great mentor to me while I worked with him at the Attorney General's Office.  We often shared old football stories as we performed audits within the Child Support Office.

He was also a man of great faith.  He often spoke of the love that he had for his church and his faith.  Although, I haven't spoken to him in  years, I will keep fond memories of the man in who the children thought was "Santa Clause".

Harold was a Character with a capital C.  I loved him and so appreciated his uniqueness. He was an interesting man with lots of interests.
 Three things stand out to me....his taste in music was one. When he was working he could have on "The Yellow Rose of Texas" one day, and opera the next! 
Also, I enjoyed being entertained with his stories, punctuated with laughter. His sense of humor was a major part of his personality.
And third, he and my mother had a good time together, whether it was traveling to Egypt or going to the State Fair, or just to Half-Price books.  
I really do salute Harold as a good man and feel quite blessed to have had him in my life.









My uncle Harold enjoyed telling stories of his childhood. He had the best belly laugh and a strong voice that projected throughout the house. We will miss him dearly. He was part of the generation who was strong, unafraid, honest and had morals. I am blessed that God put him in my life. 

Harold was an amazing man. Thoughtful, generous, smart and a fashion sense for suspenders. Rest In Peace.  

Harold always had a way to make people laugh and I  will miss the deep belly laughs and long technical discussions we had. He had so many funny stories of his military life and mischief he caused his sergeants, that he mostly got away with. I remember Harold and Carolyn would also come to almost every family event and so kind to all the great grandchildren. Harold also inspired me to finish my Masters degree when I thought I had waited to late to find out he had finished his later in life as well. 

Papa, we love and miss you. My favorite memories with you were when I was in Jr High. You would pick me up on Wednesdays to come hang out with you and Carolyn. I love your laugh and will miss hearing it. Love you. 

Harold and I bonded pretty quickly after the initial "getting to know you" phase of our relationship.  He was a person who shared my deep devotion to all things Texas, loved guns and shooting as I do, and could always give as good as he took when it came to joking around.  Indeed, Harold's humor and belly-laughs were a family legend.   As both of us became increasingly hard of hearing, our conversations were frequently quite loud and punctuated with raucous challenges and booming laughter that would rattle the walls.   He will be sorely missed. 

To the kids at church, Harold was Santa Claus. He was every bit the character with his white beard, healthy belly, and a hearty laugh to match. To me, Harold was my Granny's companion and a bonus grandfather. I'm not sure a man in this world could ask for much more, especially when it comes to the type of granddad Harold was to me.

When I was a child, Harold always had a Texas-styled gift for me when he visited. It was usually in the form of an old pocket-knife, antique BB gun or .22 rife, or whatever he thought a boy growing up in Texas should have at my age. He knew I was fond of these things, and always had the right thing to make me feel special.

As a young adult, I bonded with Harold through healthy teasing and banter. He found it hilarious that I chose to torture myself by following in his foot steps and obtaining my CPA license. When he found out I hunted with a scope rather than the iron-sighted rifle he gave me, he lamented those "poor little animals" that didn't have a chance. This was punctuated with a roaring laugh, always at the expense of my manhood.

After picking 16 year old me up from the police, rather than scold me, he chose to relate to me, telling me about his own mischief as a young man growing up in Cisco, TX, serving in the military, and other amusing tales which include IRS company football games gone awry. When I got older and a little stronger, in his eyes, he would often invite me to a scrap with the words "You're a rascal! I wanna fight you..." followed by that laugh that we all know so well. I never took him up on it. I think that 80-year-old Harold would likely have been too much for me to handle.

In the end, Harold always treated me fairly and was always appreciative of my visits to him and my Granny. He took good care of her, which is all I really could of expected, but he showed a care and generosity towards me that I have seldom found in my life. He will always be loved and is truly missed.

The Harold I remember well, could talk your ear off without even taking a breath. We would often have long talks into the night after Mom had gone to bed. He loved telling stories about his life growing up, or his viewpoints of the latest political issue or sporting event.  Although we had differing opinions about certain subjects, those would usually be the most interesting and entertaining conversations, as he never thought he was wrong about anything and was always up for a good debate... Typically ending with a good laugh.

I had an opportunity to live with Harold and Mom during one of my transitions in life and got to see first hand how much he loved and cared for my mother. They were constant companions and had regular days of the week that they did certain things. Such as, Fridays were Half Price Books days and they would bring in boxes of books they could part with and drop those off, then spend hours browsing through the store and dollar bins, only to bring bags more of books home to their vast collection. 

Harold loved his breakfasts at McDonald's, (or as he called it, Mickey D's).  When Mom was alive, they had their favorite table and would visit with the other "regulars." Sometimes they would buy breakfast for the homeless people that would be in the parking lot. After Mom died, one of the employees even came to her funeral. All he had to do was say "hello" in the drive-thru line and they knew his voice and what he wanted. He loved joking with them and I'm sure he will be missed by them.

Harold loved that children thought he looked like Santa Claus all year long. He really loved that attention. And I remember when he had his Harley Davidson and couldn't believe that he got my mother to ride with him!

I could go on and on with memories of Harold, but will mostly remember his laugh. I will miss that and his kindness to me over the years.

After my family moved out of state when I was in high school, I lived with Granny and Harold during the summer visiting my high school friends. My friends all fondly referred to him as "Santa" for obvious reasons. I remember he would be Santa some Christmases, and the only thing he was missing was a red suit because he already had the body type, white beard, and boisterously jolly attitude.

Outside of his Santa-like looks,  you could always count on Harold to be positive and laughing.  He ALWAYS had a joke or something funny he wanted to tell you.  If you were in a group of people, he would pull you to the side and tell you something he thought would make you laugh in a hushed voice. He had that way of making a personal connection and showing you he cared. I smile every time I think about him.

 I couldn't have asked for a better Granddad. I'll miss him, and I offer my condolences to all the many others that will as well.

I remember Harold with suspenders, a beard, a smile, a story and a strong opinion- all rolled into one. I can still hear his voice and his laugh. He was a wonderful companion to my Granny and showed my family such love and generosity always. I will miss him and cherish my fond memories.

Harold was a great guy.  About ten years ago he got interested in playing the drums and at the time I was giving drum lessons in Austin,

I’d meet at their townhouse around lunchtime.  We’d jam on the drums for about an hour and then Granny would serve us lunch.  I’ll remember those lunches and our great conversations forever.

Harold was a great man and Texan.  He will be missed.  

Harold, as we always knew him, was married to my Granny Carolyn for 35 years. I remember him as a true Texan, always ready to stand on his own two feet and protect what was his.

I remember traveling out to Cisco to visit he and Granny on their rustic land, and hearing stories of the wildlife they encountered, and their plans for the main house.

Luckily we were able to keep in touch and visit with Harold in the years after Granny passed away, and I always admired his independence even as he grew older.

He was a great part of my life. He'll be missed, and remembered fondly.

Every time Mom and I visited, when I was younger, Harold always had something fun to show me or an interesting story to tell me.  We shared a common interest in gadgets!! I really miss those times.
You're at peace now, Harold.

My favorite memories of Harold were when we enjoyed heated debates about our political favorites (we were on opposite sides of the fence!!)He always looked forward to challenging my opinion on the politics of the day, laughing all the time. 

And he and I both loved the UT baseball team.  Much to my mother's chagrin, we would watch a bit of a baseball game as soon as I would arrive for a visit and make commentary on the team, coach, or their record.
