John Nelson Sanders passed away May 21, 2009. Dr. Sanders was born in Sanger Texas, September 1, 1919. He graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport Louisiana (1936) and from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge (1940). He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1940 to 1945 and was discharged as a Major. During this time he was a pilot and flight instructor. While overseas he flew 37 missions in B-29 bombers from India, China and the South Pacific. After the war, he attended medical school at the University of Tennessee and completed residencies at the University of Michigan and the University of Tennessee. In 1954 he moved to Austin and established a successful private practice in Urology. He was well respected by his peers and the community that he served for 35 years before retiring in 1989. His hobbies included coaching baseball, following his favorite sport teams, ranching, reminiscing about his military service and travel. He served as President of the Northwest Little League. Nelson is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Sarah Rogers Sanders; his children Sandra Pruett and her husband Harry, Glen Sanders, Wayne Sanders and his wife Debbie. Also six grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Elizabeth (Pruett) and Jerry Newman (daughters Sarah and Rachel), Doug and Jill Pruett (daughters Katherine and Alexandra), Glen Sanders, Jr., Laura (Sanders) and Curt Franklin, Brittany (Sanders) and Michael McCurry, and Brady Sanders. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., with the service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
