Imogene Marilyn Halbert Johnson of Austin, Texas passed away peacefully on January 20, 2023 at the age of 94. She was born on April 16, 1928 in Halma, Minnesota to Clarence and Oline Halbert. She graduated from high school in Halma in 1945 and with determination and purpose continued to work hard and learn until becoming an IRS employee in Austin, Texas and retiring in the 1980s.
Jean was a devout member in Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Austin, Texas and active in its governance up to its dissolution. Her faith was inherent in her strength and moral fortitude and guided her through many challenges in her lifetime.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Oline, her husband, Budd Johnson, her three sisters, Maxine Flannery, Beverly Johnson and Bonnie Swanson, her daughter, Shelley Berdoll, two grandchildren, Kristi and Matthew Johnson and her beloved companion, Dan West.
She is survived by her children, Kent Johnson and wife, Dianne, Steven Johnson and wife, Kathy, and Debra Johnson. She also leaves a legacy of sixteen grandchildren, Kent Johnson II and wife, Angie, Kelley Hudson, Garett Johnson and wife, Sheila, Melissa Johnson, Lance Berdoll and wife, Lavonne, Megan Johnson, Amy Johnson, Whitney Franks and husband, Nathan, Pierce Johnson and wife, Kylie, Laura Funderburk and husband, Lee, Melanie Wyrick and husband, Shane, Teresa Johnson, Brent Moore and wife, Kathleen, Dennis Moore, Evan Johnson and wife, Lana, Blake Johnson and wife, Ashley; twenty-eight great grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren. Jean also will be remembered and cherished by nieces, nephews and friends she held dear in her heart and memories. As she told us in life about family, it is important to “keep the love flowing.”
Jean loved to recount stories about her childhood in Halma. She was a strong, courageous, and generous woman devoted to the care of her family. She was an avid gardener with impeccable lawns and landscaping. Jean enjoyed travel and was a serious domino player, teaching grandchildren how to “play by the rules” no matter their age. She was the model of forgiveness with her kind heart.
The family would like to thank the director of wellness and carepartners at Avanti Senior Living at Towne Lake for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in their final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life in the Chapel at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral home at 6300 West William Cannon Drive in Austin, Texas on Saturday, February 4 at 10 am, with the interment to follow.
Visitation with the family will begin at 6 pm on February 3 at the same location.
