Hiram Glynn Turner, Col. USAF Retired, 84, of Austin, TX died following a lengthy illness on Thursday, February 27, 2014. Our "Pops" was born July 26, 1929 to Drue and Lemma Turner in Limestone County, TX. He attended Fair Oaks School in Limestone County, followed by Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. There he obtained his Bachelor of Science in agriculture and met and married his devoted wife Jessie in 1951. He then joined the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country, all across the United States and Japan, and advancing to the rank of Colonel prior to his retirement in 1974. He and his family then moved to Huntsville, TX where he went to work for the Texas Department of Corrections until he retired a second time. Hiram and Jessie moved to Austin in 1996 to be closer to family.
Mr. Turner is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jessie; sister Florene Reed and husband Dwayne of Pasadena, TX; daughter Julie Turner Pike and husband Chris; daughter Susie Turner; son Mike Turner and wife Cheryl; grandchildren Kristen Turner and Scott Turner, all of Austin, TX.
Pops loved his family, his dog Checkers, gardening, traveling in his motorhome and good food. He was most proud of his family and his military service to his country.
Visitation to be held Wednesday, March 5 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress. Services will be at the same location on Thursday, March 6 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX at 1:45 p.m.
The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff of Seton Medical Center Main for such respectful and professional care during our many visits there. We would also like to thank the staff of Central Texas Rehabilitation Center and Longhorn Village Nursing and Rehab Center for supporting our family during many trying times. Words just aren't enough to express our heartfelt appreciation. We owe a very special debt of gratitude to the wonderful caregivers from Home Care Assistance who cared for Pops at home, allowing him to be with his family.
