I’ve know Hilton aka (Gravely) for a short ten years, you wouldn’t know it but he was a gamer!! We played the same online game and were teammates for those ten years. We chatted on and off every single day.  You were a big part of my daily life. I know you loved all your teammates and they loved you from around the world! We texted all the time if it was just a picture or hey I’m going dove hunting or telling me and sending pics of your beloved pristine truck and trophies!!  And About your two kids which you adored!! Asking about my grandkids and being there online when I lost my sister. You were one of a kind who I was truly blessed to call my best friend. You’d be getting ready for one of your football parties cooking up a storm for your friends but would pop online to let us know you’d be back later that evening! I’m struggling with this like so many others but I know you’re no longer in pain. Your game name Gravely was for your love of the tractor an our game will never ever be the same without you! You were a true leader, I miss your humor your friendship your love as my dearest friend, thank you for that Hilton I love you!!

I remember going to Franklin’s Barbeque on a Saturday when the line stretched beyond the parking lot.  We had an ice chest on wheels and were headed to the front of the line. We were being heckled by those in line as we went.  Hilton took the stairs on the back of the building and Aaron let us in.  Hilton’s order was ready to go.  People in line were amazed (and jealous) at our ability to pull off such a coup.
I remember going to Hilton’s trailer house in Lubbock for the first time. This is where I met Trixie -- Trixie, the wonder dog.  She was a beautiful dog and was so smart.  I fell in love with that dog.  Hilton would make sandwiches (he wouldn’t let you make your own) and I took Trixie outside for her business and to play fetch.  She was the best dog a man could hope for.  Hilton called me to tell me that Trixie had passed away that morning in his arms.  I cried along with him.  Trixie was truly a once in a lifetime animal and friend. 
I remember our tubing trips down the Guadalupe River.  I remember Greene Hall, October Fest, Austin Fest and Chilympiad.  Skiing Lake Austin, Super Bowl Parties and playing golf in South Carolina.  I remember chasing jack rabbits in an open field next to campus.  Going dove hunting.  I remember how he could cut in line at Franklin’s Barbeque.  How hard he worked on the boat dock at the end of the drive.  How he would be there for you in times of need.  He was the Best Man at my wedding and one of my best friends.
I just wanted to share this tribute to Hilton for a friendship that lasted over fifty years.

My name is Randy Duncan.  Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Hilton’s Memorial Service.  I’ve known Hilton for the better part of five decades and want to share some memories and adventures that defined our friendship.  
I met Hilton in my freshman year at Texas Tech.  We were playing foosball at Town Draw, a pub close to the campus.  Admittingly, he was hard to beat.  But that was true whether it was foosball, pool, darts, pinball, or any other barroom sport for that matter.  
I remember one of our dove hunting trips.  It was the end of the day, and we were about to pack up.  Hilton was leaning against the tailgate when two doves flew over.  He fired two shots and hit one.  He moved two or three feet off the tailgate and caught the falling bird in his dove bag attached to his waist.  (That was way cool, dude!)
I remember when Hilton’s home on Winsted Lane was flooded by Shoal Creek.  We were sailing Lake Conroe on Hilton’s Hobi Cat.  We learned that his house was severely flooded, and our three-day getaway ended abruptly.  (As you know, he hardly took vacations as he was always ‘on call’.)
I remember meeting Chris Stubblefield of Stubb’s Barbeque fame, twice.  We first met him at his joint in Lubbock.  He really liked Hilton and they would break away and have their own conversions.  (Is this where Hilton learned to cook such amazing briskets?)  We visited Stubb again when he was selling barbeque in the parking lot of a “by the month” motel on the interstate in Austin.  (They resumed the same conversations they left in Lubbock.)
I remember when we met Jimmie Dale Gilmore at Town Draw.  This was before he and some other Lubbock boys formed the Flatlanders and left for the music scene in Austin.  Jimmie was very nice and totally unassuming.  Later, these Flatlanders talked Stubbs into moving to Austin.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. Hilton was one of a kind. My first memory was meeting him in 1978… he lived on Winstead Lane and his dog Trixie could spell backwards. She knew that L L A B meant ball. I can still hear his voice

I grew up across the street from Hilton on Lytle Lake in Abilene.  Hilton has been a friend  for well over 50 years and our lives will be less bright without him.  My sincere condolences to the family.  
Rest easy my friend.

We are so saddened to hear of Hilton’s passing. Hilton was a constant, here when we moved into the neighborhood and we just thought he would always be here. Striving to maintain the character and charm of this pearl tucked away seemingly from the rest of Austin. A wealth of knowledge and history was in his head, making sure we stayed within the lines, I smile at recollections of some zoning ordinance or tax implication that he would recall to prevent us from going astray with the boat dock. He was more than the mayor, he was also the head of the department of public works, all the paving down the hill that we enjoy was due to his tireless efforts. We lived across the street but we would always able over to have a conversation. We will miss his Superbowl parties that were the highlight of the social season. He will be missed, The Dimston’s
