Helen was born in Wilmington, Delaware on December 19, 1937, to Dr. and Mrs. Roger Murray. She attended Marjorie Webster College in Washington, DC. Over a semester break, she met her husband of 53 years, Charles Edgar Baxter III. Ed and Helen, with their two small children, settled in Austin in 1967. Helen was graduated from The University of Texas magna cum laude with a BA in History.
Helen's passion was food. She was employed as a food writer and restaurant critic for Texas Monthly Magazine, which led her into restaurant management and eventually she became a food service consultant. Helen was a Director of the Wine and Food Foundation of Texas and served as President of the Austin Opera Guild.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Emily Baxter O'Brien, her son, Charles Edgar Baxter IV, his wife Rebecca McHargue Baxter, and her grandchildren Quentin, Parker, Spencer and Sophie. She is also survived by her brother, Roger Murray, her nephew, Eric Murray and his wife Linda, and her niece, Melissa Wells.
Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1500 N. Capital of Texas Highway, Austin, Texas.
