Georgene Wilson, born on May 9, 1937, in Texarkana, Texas, to John and Rosetta Self, lived a life marked by faith, love, and excellence. From an early age, her father instilled in her a commitment to excellence, often reminding her, “Georgene, excellence is who you are, and excellence is what you do.” Her mother complemented this by nurturing in her a deep conviction to stand for righteousness and a devotion to family. These values became the foundation of her life.
Baptized at a young age, Georgene began her relationship with Jesus, a journey that shaped her life and the lives of those around her. She graduated from Dunbar High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Huston-Tillotson College (HTC). While at HTC, she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Beta Kappa Chapter, in the Spring of 1956. During her time at HTC, she also met James Robert Wilson, the love of her life. They were married for 63 years and built a legacy of love and faith together.
Georgene dedicated 38 years to inspiring young minds as a teacher in the Austin Independent School District, upholding the same standard of excellence her father instilled in her. Beyond the classroom, her faith continued to deepen as a long-time member of Greater Mount Zion Church, where she served faithfully in the prayer ministry. Her spiritual journey led her to participate in Bible Study Fellowship, where she poured her love and prayers into the lives of other women and the leadership team.
Later, Georgene joined First Baptist Church, where she cherished her Pastor, Griff Martin, her Sunday school classes, and the friendships she made. Her faith and leadership were recognized when she was invited to serve as a Deacon, a role she fulfilled with dedication and grace.
Georgene’s legacy lives on in her sons, Brian (Carol) and Blake (Ronique), her beloved spiritual daughter, Kathy Clark, and her grandchildren: Grant (Elise), Maxwell, Reagan, and Robert Chance. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends, all of whom she considered family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, John and Rosetta; her sisters, Addrena Marie McCullar and Ethel Faye Hamilton; and her peers of that generation.
Her family and loved ones remember her as a Proverbs 31 woman—a devoted wife, loving mother, faithful friend, and committed servant to her community and faith. Georgene’s life was a testament to her vision, faith, and love, and her impact will continue to resonate through all who knew her.
Well done, Mom. Well done!
