After graduation, Gary worked at UT for 35 years, 28 of those as Director of Operations at The Texas Union.
The students in the Union's Management Committee, with whom he worked as Advisor, honored him by having his name engraved in the Ring of Honor in the entrance to the lobby of the Union.
In 2011, Gary was chosen to receive the Arno Nowotny Medal for meritorious service to The University, the highest honor a member of UT's staff can earn.
Gary was a member of the Association of College Unions International, UT's Learning Activities for Mature People (LAMP), and the Capital Area Parkinson's Society (CAPS).
Prior to their retirement, Gary and Elaine traveled to most of the countries in Western Europe and Scandinavia, where they made some cherished friends. After their retirement, they pursued their passion for travel and cruised to many locales, including Alaska, Hawaii, through the Panama Canal, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and China.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Robert. He is survived by Elaine, his wife of 51 years, his sister-in-law, Katherine Jane Shelton, two nieces, Kitten and Lisa, one nephew, Monty, and his Great Dane, Isis.
Elaine would like to thank Dr. Thomas Hill for the many years of excellent care he provided as Gary's neurologist and for the compassionate care and support she and Gary received from the staff on the 5th floor of St. David's Main Hospital.
He will be interred in the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Mausoleum in Pflugerville. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation to honor his memory are asked to make them to the Capital Area Parkinson's Society (CAPS) at P. O. Box 27565, Austin, TX 78755.
