Retired Captain Frederic (Fred) Kelly peacefully passed away on March 10, 2023 at the age of 82. Fred retired from the Austin Fire Department in 1993 after 30 years of service. He loved every day as a fireman and received numerous commendations from the City of Austin as well as the State of Texas during the 1983 Capitol building fire, where he helped rescue Lt. Gov Bill Hobby’s daughter, Kate. He also served in the Army Reserves and worked at the University of Texas Recreational Sports for 47 years. Fred was inducted into the UT Rec Sports Hall of Honor in 2022. He was a devoted Longhorn and supported all UT sports teams. He also appears on the Intramural Wall of Fame over 35 times in various sports. Fred was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Doris Shafer Kelly; son Kevin Kelly and wife Mandy; daughter-in-law Louise Kelly; granddaughters Kathryn Kelly, Jennifer Litchfield and Samantha Harris Person and husband Stuart; great grandchildren, Lexi and Bennett Litchfield, Parker Person, stepson Greg Harris and wife Jill; sisters Debby Maddux and Karen Wooten and numerous nieces and nephews.
During his tenure at UT, he touched the lives of thousands of students, staff and faculty. His life’s work and legacy will continue to impact future generations of Longhorns. A visitation for Frederic will be held Friday, April 21, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar, Austin, TX 78752. A funeral service will occur Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 10:00 AM, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78752. A graveside service will occur Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 11:30 AM at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, Texas 78731.
