He was born on January 6, 1972, in Sealy, Texas to Billy and Sue Schavrda. Eric was a 1983 Little League baseball Dodgers champion, coached by his dad. He graduated from Sealy High School (Go Tigers) in 1990. Eric started college at the University of Houston and graduated with his bachelor’s in psychology from St. Edward’s University in Austin.
Eric dedicated his career to the service of others. He worked at The Brenham State School and The Oaks Psychiatric Hospital, assisting patients before moving into teaching. His teaching career began at the Pflugerville Independent School District, where he taught in a Life Skills classroom. In 2002, he moved to the Austin Independent School District as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments, where he was employed until his passing.
For several years, Eric and close friends ran a summer program for visually impaired students. “Real Treks” provided accessibility to outdoor experiences and included activities like camping, cooking, kayaking, hiking, and surfing.
Eric grew up with many cousins who were more like siblings due to the closeness of a wonderful, large extended family. He enjoyed many adventures with his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. They took camping trips to Inks Lake and annual ski trips to Breckenridge. He loved music, especially The Beatles (John Lennon being his favorite), The Smiths, and Pixies. He enjoyed golfing with his son Lou and his dad Billy, “Fat Mike,” and Blado. Many good friends with great nicknames are not mentioned here, but they know who they are. He enjoyed cooking and grilling and bantering with friends around the fire pit. He was happiest being at home. Eric and Jill enjoyed designing a home and outdoor space for quiet family time and gathering with friends. However, it was all fashioned from Eric’s creative vision. He was often found floating in the pool with a book and living his best life. Everyone who knew Eric appreciated his sometimes-dark sense of humor. He had an affinity for bestowing nicknames on all people and pets. Emi and Lou were gifted with a sharp sense of humor that could only have come from Eric. While he and Lou loved to take in sports, he and Emelia shared their love of sci-fi and horror movies. They all shared a special bond over King of the Hill and its similarities to everyday life in Texas.
Eric is survived by his wife Jill, his daughter Emi, his son Lou, and his parents Billy and Sue. Numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive him. Eric was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Battaile Schavrda.
