With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ellery Donald Bergstrom (Don) on December 18, 2024. Born in Davis, West Virginia in 1934, Don was the son of Carl Henry & Thelma Hobbs Bergstrom. He knew at an early age that he wanted to serve his country and joined the military as soon as he was able.
After a brief period in the Army, Don served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1974. He was stationed in many places all over the world including Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Guam, and Spain. He is a Korean War veteran and a Vietnam War veteran having served four tours. During his service he earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with V Device and Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts.
When Don was stationed in California, he met Helen Axt Reece and in 1970 they were married. Together they raised their children: Robin Rebecca, John Andrew, and Donald Eric. After his final duty station in Nebraska, Don retired and the family moved to Austin, Texas where he began a new career with the IRS. He continued his passion to serve in a variety of other capacities including: Hospice Volunteer for 20 years, Stephen Minister, Grief Counselor, Medical Supplies provider for those in need, and volunteered with all his heart and soul for decades at Ascension Lutheran Church. He was also a committed Blood Donor who donated over 25 gallons of blood in his lifetime.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and loving wife Helen. He leaves behind his greatest legacy: his enduring love for his friends and family, especially his three grandchildren and great granddaughter. He will be remembered as Husband, Father, Father-in-Law, Grandpa, Papa, Partner, and Forever Friend to so many.
