Dot grew up in Mobile, Alabama. Although she was an only child, she grew up in a house with a family of 13: grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She graduated from Murphy High School and then from Auburn University with her BS in Education. Dot was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and one of the Glomerata beauties. She met and married George in 1954 while at Auburn. After his brief stint as a US Navy aviator, he began his career as a petroleum engineer and she began hers as an Exxon wife. Diane and Bill were born in pretty short order and the family moved 20 times in 30 years including Pensacola, FL; Hutchinson, KS; Patuxent River, MD; Houston (4), Kingsville, New Orleans (6), Gainesville, FL; Morgan City, LA; Midland, Darien, CT; London and Austin. Dot met the challenge of each move with aplomb, skillfully coordinating their family's transfers of houses and schools. After growing up in one place, she saw each move as a great adventure. Her grace and Southern charm were her hallmark and won enduring friendships. She was the heart of her family, creating a warm and loving home for her husband and children. Dot loved sewing and became an accomplished cook over the years. Quite an achievement for a young woman who couldn't boil water when she got married and whose mother told her to never let George know that she knew how to iron! She was an avid tennis player and played weekly matches at the Houston Racquet Club until she was 83.
Dot was honored for her 35 years of service as a Methodist hospital visitor to Presbyterians from out of town by the POP ministry (Prayers of the People) as the 2014 Lay Chaplain of the Year. She and George were active members of Memorial Drive Presbyterian in Houston until they moved to Westlake Hills Presbyterian in Austin. They were dedicated supporters of their beloved Auburn University, endowing the George E. and Dorothy S. Uthlaut Computer Laboratory in Ross Hall and two professorships. They were also involved for many years with Faith in Practice, a medical mission in Guatamala.
Dot suffered a broken hip after a fall in late November and then a steep decline in dementia. Her family is so grateful for the care she received at Querencia's skilled nursing facility and her devoted caregivers from Halcyon Home.
A family memorial service will be held at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, March 20 at 11:00 am. It will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person.
