Mother, “Aunt Dot“, “Miss Dorothy”, passed away November 9th at Park Bend Health Center at the age of 102. Mother was always a fighter and did so until the end. She was born in Buda, Texas to Samuel Jackson Clark and Ida Bell Smith who had moved from Alabama at a time when cotton was king. The family became sharecroppers, growing cotton on leased land.
The family was large at 9, which was normal back then as was farming leased land. Of course, everyone helped on the farm. Mother picked cotton and had many other chores on the farm as a child. She attended Hays County School graduating in 1937. Mother took several jobs during the coming years: restaurant, pharmacy and general store were some. She met Troy Utah Scott and fell in love. Marriage was next and on June 29, 1941, mother was married. In 1943 the couple gave birth to their first child; Utah Earl and in 1948 Charles Gene was born. Mother insisted on our participation in church, sending us off to Sunday School every weekend and Vacation Bible School every summer.
Eventually, she got a job at the Texas Insurance Checking Office in Austin, where she worked for 35 years until retirement in 1985. Later, Mother took care of children at church schools and a church nursery. Mother loved the “little ones” and they loved “Miss Dorothy.” She volunteered to deliver for Meals on Wheels and did so for many years. She loved her plants and flowers, nurturing them day by day. She very much enjoyed being with all her nieces and nephews and was especially proud of all her grandchildren.
Predeceased include her parents Samuel and Ida, brothers Otis, Clifton, Cecil, Preston and sister Alma.
Survivors include: Utah Earl Scott (Donna); Charles Gene Scott (Debbie) ; sister Helen Doris Foster; grandchildren: Renee Scott Peters (Scott), Donnell Earl Scott, Michael Preston Scott (Lauren), Matthew Clark Scott and Karen Christine Scott. Also, nieces/nephews who helped mother so much over the years: Ida, Nancy, Terri Lynn, Ray, Stephen, and so many others.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Meals on Wheels of Central Texas or Dell’s Children Hospital of Austin.
