Don was born to Ida Zoe (Tangney) McNeal and Clinton Louis McNeal on May 13, 1925, in Allegan, Michigan. He was raised with three brothers, Louis, Clinton & Howard and one sister, Marilyn, during the Great Depression years.
At only 16, Don left his home and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His Father lied about his age so he could join. While in Boot Camp, in Rhode Island, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He recently shared the memory of that day, saying that all the young men were whipped into a patriotic frenzy, running to grab their rifles, eager to retaliate, to protect and defend America! “We were just a bunch of crazy, gung ho kids!”
He went on to serve on the submarine tender, Antaeus during WWII. He left the Navy in November of 1947.
He then joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as a Master Sergeant, in 1971, at Fort Hood, Texas. Over the years, he was stationed in several different locations including (but not limited to) Fort Eustis, (Newport News) Virginia, Fort Huachuca,(Sierra Vista) Arizona, Mainz, Germany, and Fort Hood, (Killeen) Texas.
After retirement, Don returned to school and received a Bachelor of Business Administration, in 1975, from St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas.
Don had an extremely strong work ethic and performed many jobs before and after his military service. They were widely varied ranging from driving an ice cream truck, to delivering the mail for the US Postal Service, to managing The University Co-op, to civil service work for Navy Audit in Washington, DC, and as an Auditor for Army Audit in San Antonio, Texas.
Beyond his dedication to excelling in his professional endeavors, he also found time to raise a family! He married his “one and only”, Gloria Fe' Malabad, at only 18 years old! They ran away to Camden, North Carolina where they didn't need their parent's permission to wed. On May 31, 1943 they began their journey as husband and wife that endured “for better or for worse” for 64 years, when Gloria passed away. Their union gave birth to five children. Donald James McNeal, Jr., Timothy Patrick McNeal, Adrienne Marie (Moffitt), Mark Darren McNeal, and Michael Anthony McNeal. All of whom survive him, save his second born, Timothy Patrick, who preceded him in death in 2011. Their legacy lives on through their 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren!
This Veteran of three wars will be buried with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. His wife, Gloria's urn, will be interred with him there. The family has opted to have graveside services only. They will be held on Tuesday, March 3rd, at 2:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Wounded Warriors Project or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
