
I feel so very lucky that such a wonderfull person came through my life.  I have a very fond memory of Don and I dancing the Schadish (sp?) at the NCO club at Bergstrom and because he was so good everyone else moved off the dance floor and it was just he and I.  That embarassed him a bit so he decided to quit dancing.  He was a very humble sweet man.



I loved uncle donald with all my heart for who he was he knew when he came to my house he was free to do as he pleased we never tried to change anything about him. he came to my house every Thanksgiving and Christmas since my Mom passed and he missed the last few because he didnt have a car. but last time i talked to him was a few weeks back he said " dont worry ill see ya again you can count on it" i said oh I know we talked alot and i miss him 



Sorry to hear abuut Don, He was a great Guy  We car pooled together to Ft Hood and back . we were both Electric Lineman and members of the  Brother Hood of Electrical workers,        You are in our Prayers.     Austin   Pewee.WKXWN



We had many good and fun times playing music together and I'll remember these. Don was a good and deceit man and he will be missed. My deepest sympathies to his family. Jimmy

After I saw the memories of the horses etc. I thought of a funny story from the late 70's. One Sunday morning, Don and I were riding down South Lamar in his convertible, with the top down, after going to the Elks Lodge for Bloody Mary's. He had decided he didn't like country music anymore, and turned on this rock station. I said "that's terrible" and turned it back to a country station, so-o-o-o he took the knobs off the radio and threw them out the window. Then he said "now try changing the stations again". THAT WAS DON!!!!!!!



Yes, Uncle Don is playing his heart out with my grandma, Irene. I know it's beautiful. It makes me smile.

I've always loved my Uncle Don. I remember when I was young, he took me to the San Antonio Zoo. He rented horses for us to ride in the park. My horse was a runaway horse, and I was on it. I held on like crazy.  He raced up on his horse, and grabbed the reins on my horse. He stopped that horse for me. My hero! I've loved horses ever since. I had him over last Christmas, and it meant so much to me. He reminded me of how, when I was little, I would run to find him playing pool, at the Broken Spoke, to ask him to dance the Cotton Eyed Joe with me. My aunt played there often. 
He also bought me my first cowboy hat. It was orange, and felt. I loved it! When he was over for Christmas, he brought that up. It meant the world to us both. He brought over pictures...even the one with his son. He was so proud of 
those. .... He had a heart of gold. I will never forget how wonderful he was to me, and I'll never forget his laugh. I will always love him, and always miss him.

Dear "Swede" and family. So sorry to hear about Don. You are in our prayers for your two great losses recentley. Hang in. We love you. Bert and Shirley. 



Donald and I grew up on the same street, Aurora Drive, in Austin.  We were also high school classmates at McCallum (class of 1960) being in the same advisory.  He teased me quite a bit back then.
Fond memories of a big funny guy.  So sorry to hear of his passing.

Wonder if Don ever added up all the women he thrilled by dancing with them....I was one of them.......your brother Kennerh and..Precious Irene Franklin has gone on before you so hopeing by the time the rest of us Old Country Austin get there yall be tuned up and can play us a song......how bout Drinkin Champagne..thanks Don for leaving us with some great memories...



Don was one of a kind!!! He had such a dry sense of humor, but laughed at himself after he said something crazy. He was one of the best musician/singers/ dancers that ever walked this earth. Fortunately, we were able to see him not long ago, and finally meet the son he had talked continually about for over forty years! God Bless You Donnie and the entire Lightsey family.

As long as I have known Don, and as many gigs as Don and I played together, there are too many stories to write. One story that always comes to mind is back when Don was literally working seven days a week and playing many nights a week. He was playing with a band I played with, and we were at "Big G's Club" in Round Rock.......on a high stage. He was playing bass and was sitting on his amp's speaker box and he fell asleep. He fell all the way to the floor and crashed resoundingly and never missed a note. Back in those days, Don was one of the better bass men around town.
