David Hudson Hertel, Sr. died peacefully November 19, 2005 in Austin, Texas. Born October 21, 1920 in Winnetka, Illinois, Dave graduated from New Trier High School and then became a Naval pilot, flying Corsairs during World War II. Dave was an adoring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. As early as the fourth grade, Dave attended church by himself so he could sing in the church choir. As an accomplished bass vocalist, he thrived on listening to classical music and graced a number of weddings with his rendition of The Lords Prayer. His sense of humor and smile earned Dave the privilege of being called a friend by many. Dave is survived by his wife of sixty years, Dorothy Becher Hertel, son David Hertel, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Lana Hertel of Austin; daughter Nancy Hertel of Ft. Collins, Colorado; son Bill Hertel and daughter-in-law, Karen Hertel of Austin; daughter Betsy Smith and son-in-law, Bill Smith of Bellevue, Colorado; daughter Margaret Prince and son-in-law, Robert Prince of Austin. Grandchildren include David (Trey) Hertel, III of Austin, Brannon Hertel of Littleton, Colorado, Chapin Hertel and Landon Hertel of Austin, Blaine, Rebecca and Emily Smith of Bellevue, Colorado and Hannah Prince of Austin. Great-grandson is Max Hertel of Littleton, Colorado. A memorial service celebrating Daves life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday November 22, 2005 at Hill Country Bible Church Northwest, 12124 RR 620 N., Austin, Texas.
