Darlene Elizabeth Schild of Austin, Texas passed away peacefully at home on November 18, 2024, two weeks after her 95th birthday. She had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
Darlene was born on November 3, 1929 in Ogallala, Nebraska, the oldest child of Arthur F. and Ida K. Imig. The family moved frequently during her childhood. Darlene graduated from Northeast High School in Lincoln, Nebraska and from University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a B.S. in Education in 1952. She taught 4th and 5th grades at Clinton Elementary School in Lincoln and had several other jobs before becoming a mother. She married Wayne A. Schild on August 4, 1952. They moved to Oklahoma City in 1957 and then to Tripoli, Libya in 1959 where Wayne was employed as a geologist. In 1966, they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana and then back to Tripoli in 1968. They then moved to Lagos, Nigeria and Caracas, Venezuela before retiring in Austin in 1987.
Darlene was a homemaker and loving mother to her four children. She enjoyed playing the piano, knitting, cooking and baking. She volunteered as a caregiver through Hope Presbyterian Church for 18 years. She and Wayne were world travelers visiting 197 countries and island groups during her lifetime. Darlene was a devout Christian and a member of Hope Presbyterian Church of Austin.
Darlene was preceded in death by her brother, Leland Imig. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Wayne Schild, her daughter Katherine Sinton (Frank), sons Jeff Schild, Grant Schild (Renata) and Keith Schild and seven grandchildren, Brooke Coats (Kevin), Rachel Long (Alex), Jake Sinton (Jasmeet), Kevin Schild, John Schild, Conner Schild, and Nicole Schild and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Eileen Creeth, Ardis Jacobson and Al Imig (Beth) and sisters-in-law Sue Imig, Wilma Kilgore, Marlene Syas, and Wanda Eihausen, brother-in-law Mark Schild and many nieces and nephews.
No memorial services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the charity of your choice.
