Our dear Mother, Christine “Johnnie” Janicek Toungate, 91, of Austin, Texas, passed away on December 4, 2016 after a brief illness. Christine was born on January 25, 1925, in Granger, Texas to parents John and Christina Struhall Janicek. After graduating as valedictorian of her Granger High School class, Christine enrolled in the Seton School of Nursing in Austin, Texas, class of 1945, graduating with high honors. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Raymond Lum Toungate. They were married for 53 years until his untimely death in 1999. They raised seven children while Daddy ran his successful business, Raymond’s Drug, in the University of Texas campus area for 35 years. In addition, they were founding members of St. Louis Catholic Church and Balcones Little League. After raising her children, Mother returned to nursing for 11 years as manager of Sterile Processing at St. David’s Hospital on 32nd Street.
Mother was preceded in death by her parents, two siblings, Alois and Margaret, husband Raymond, son John Roy (JR) Toungate, and son-in-law James Daniel. She is survived by her children Dorothy Toungate Richardson, RL Toungate and wife Connie, daughter-in-law Alice Toungate, Chrissie Toungate Daniel, Tommy Toungate and wife Brenda, Mark Toungate and wife Teresa, and Jay Toungate and wife Lori; eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Jenny Toungate, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, all who called her MawMaw. Mother was devoted to her family, many, many loving friends, her Czech heritage, her Seton School of Nursing Alumni Association, her Catholic religion, gambling trips to Las Vegas, and her UT Longhorns and Houston Astros.
Pallbearers will be her sons, and grandsons Tyler Toungate and Adam Richardson. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday, December 8, from 4-7 pm. with rosary at 5:30 pm, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, North Lamar location. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 9, at 11:00am at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Road, Austin, Texas, with burial following at Cook-Walden Capital Parks, Pflugerville, Texas.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale, Parmer Lane, especially her assisted living devoted caregiver Bridget, and lead concierge Portia, and her physician, Dr. Mary Maxwell also thanks to Nurse Jo and Hospice Austin.
