appeared outside her window.
A beautiful child, she was dearly loved by her mother Margaret Crayton Munday, an amazing
Southern cook, and her father James McGee Munday, the Assistant Chief of the Charlotte, North
Carolina Fire Department. Cheryle grew up directly across the street under the loving eyes of her
grandparents William Patrick and Dovie Crayton, and her Aunt Bess Holler, who taught Cheryle the
love of flowers.
Flowers were the one constant in Cheryle’s life. An Army wife, Cheryle and her beloved husband
George moved countless times in service of our nation. Their children Pam, Nancy, Cam, and Pat
watched their mother make every house a home with each garden she planted: azaleas, camellias,
plumeria, Mexican heather, daffodils, chrysanthemums, candy tuft, tulips, marigold, impatiens,
lantana – but her favorite of all were her roses. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that “The earth laughs in
flowers.” Cheryle shared many smiles.
Happiness is to hold flowers in both hands, a Japanese proverb says. Cheryle found even greater
happiness holding the hands of her grandkids Jennifer, David, Kim and Chris – and found the
greatest happiness of all in her great grandkids Emmy, James, Charlie, Jack, and Teddy.
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 1, 1926, she often boasted that “Nawth” Carolina was
the best. The great state of Texas captured her heart, however. She said that she loved it for the
wide blue skies, warm winter days, and all the sun. Perhaps it was because that is where her
flowers grew best.
A memorial service for Cheryle will be held at 4:30pm on April 9, 2024 at Weed Corley Fish Funeral
Home and Cremation Services, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, in Austin Texas.
Cheryle will be laid to rest beside her George at 11:00 am on April 10, 2024 at the Ft. Sam
Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, in San Antonio Texas.
Rest peacefully, George and Cheryle. You are loved.
