Charlie attended school in Fentress through the seventh grade, and graduated from Lockhart High School in 1943. In 1944, at the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as a Signalman, Staff of Flag Officer. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended the University of Texas at Austin. On June 24, 1950, he married Marilyn Kuempel at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pflugerville. They recently celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters, Jane Smith, Julie Thompson and husband Wayne of Austin; granddaughters, Katie Thompson of Houston, and Elizabeth Thompson of Lubbock; sister, Peggy Dahlstrom and husband Charles of Fredericksburg, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Barbara Joyce Wilson and husband Curtis.
Charlie worked several years for the Dr. Pepper and 7-Up Bottling Companies. He went to work for the United States Postal Service and retired after 25 years of service in 1988. In retirement, he enjoyed farming and raising cattle on the family farm. He was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council, taught Sunday School, and served on various committees.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18th at 12:30 pm with services following at 2:00 pm at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, located at 9700 Anderson Mill Road. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pflugerville. Memorials may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project. A special thank you to the staff and hospice at the Texas State Veterans Home in Temple, Texas for their loving care and daily kindness over the past 5 years.
