Carroll (Cal) Morgan Salls passed away March 16, 2023, shortly after celebrating his 75th birthday. Cal was born March 4, 1948, in Paris, Texas, the second son of Catherine Neyland Morgan and Elwood Kimball Salls.
He attended St. John’s School in Houston where his father E.K. was headmaster, and he played varsity basketball, graduating in 1965. Cal was awarded a scholarship to attend Princeton University, where he excelled and was head of his supper club. He received a B.A. in politics, graduating in 1969.
His professional career in finance began at Princeton Bank & Trust, where he soon became branch manager in Hopewell, New Jersey, while attending The Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.
He arrived in Austin in 1976 and began investing in real estate, which led this confirmed bachelor to the love of his life, Mary Margaret Brennan, his tenant. After a brief courtship, they were married in 1978 and blessed with their beautiful daughter Caroline Brennan Salls in 1985. In 1987, he completed work for the degree Master of Science in Historic Preservation in the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.
His professional life shifted during the recession when he began a 37-year career encompassing mental health care and residential treatment for adolescents and, later, for adults. Cal was executive director at Daystar Residential Treatment Center, and most recently the co-owner and CFO of MEMEEHA.
Cal is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Mary Margaret, his daughter Callie, son-in-law Allan Crawford, grandson Crew Nicholas, brother Kim Salls, sister-in-law Bettie of Houston, and sister Elissa Salls of Galveston. His large extended family includes 5 sisters-in-law and 5 brothers-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins with whom he shared his joy of the beach and lake life. Preceding him in death are his beloved parents, brother Randall, stepmother Anne Salls Carsey, and brother-in-law Nick Brennan.
In the last few years, Cal delighted in living full time at Lake Buchanan, where he served on the board of the Silver Creek Village POA as president and, later, treasurer.
Cal loved his coffee, his black labs, football, basketball, sweets, landscaping, gardening, and especially Patsy Cline songs and old time ‘50s rock and roll. Baptized an Episcopalian, Cal has been a contributing member of St. Austin Catholic Church since 1978.
Honorary pallbearers are Kim Salls, Doug Wilson, Bob Bergin, Jeff Brennan, Andy Brennan, Jack Brennan, Nick Jenkins, and Mack Anderson.
