Carl Edward Giles, loving son, brother and uncle, passed away on December 1, 2017. Attended by family members, he left us peacefully after a diagnosis of cancer. Born in Lewes, DE on September 24, 1947, and raised in Houston, TX, Carl graduated from Bellaire High School. In 1965, he moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. He attended UT during the heyday of Longhorn Football and was a fan forever—regardless of winning or losing season.
Following graduation, Carl made Austin his home where he resided happily for 52 years. He was a pioneer in "flipping" houses. He did much of the remodeling, landscaping and decorating himself and shopped estate sales to furnish the homes. Carl then began his 25-year career with the Texas Department of Human Services, working in the long term care division as Operations Director. Carl served on the board of Planned Parenthood. He had many lifelong friends in Austin with whom he would play bridge and travel.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marguerite Giles and is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Mickey and Terri Giles and his sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Gerald O'Gorman, Jr. He is also survived by his niece and nephew Anderson and Harrison Giles; his nephews and their spouses: Casey and Tiffany Giles, Kevin Giles and Jenny Tinch, Brian and Gretchen O'Gorman, and Timothy and Eleanor O'Gorman; and his five great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 18th at 2 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 3201 Windsor Rd., with The Reverend Shannon Preston and The Reverend Anne Hoey officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contribution be made to The Church of the Good Shepherd, Planned Parenthood of Austin or the charity of your choice.
