Betty Pharr Ray passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the age of 65. She was born on September 23, 1945 in Lampasas, Texas to Weldon and Oleta Pharr. After graduating from Lampasas High School she attended Texas State University, the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University where she received a BS in Sociology.
In 1973, June 2nd, she married Allen C. Ray, her soul mate, after which they moved to College Station because of Allen’s job. She then attended graduate school at the University of Texas. Betty worked at the Texas Employment Commission in Bryan as an Employment Interviewer before retiring to become a full-time artist, specializing in oils, pastels and charcoal. Betty also served as president of the Brazos Valley Art Show.
After retirement in 1995, Betty enjoyed visits to the beach and mountains, running, movies and reading.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Ed Pharr and niece, Cerrelle Belt. Survivors include her husband, Allen; sister, Katherine Belt; sister-in-law and husband, Malinda and Leslie Liles; sister-in-law, Melba Pharr; nephews, A.J. Pharr (wife Dana, great-nephew Josh and great-niece Shelby); and Weldon Pharr (wife Elaine, great-niece Jennifer and great-nephew Patrick); first cousin, Lee Spivey (wife Susannah, niece Lauren); cousins, Tom Francis and Phyllis Waddle; and best friend, Hazel Anliker.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010 in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, North Lamar.
