Barry grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland with his parents, Malcolm (deceased) and Fosca Anne, and three younger sisters, Lori, Donna, and Karen.
In 1984, he moved to Austin, TX for a graduate program in Classical Languages at the University of Texas. His dedication to the pursuit of knowledge led to his career in public education. He taught middle school Latin for the Eanes Independent School District for thirty years, and continued tutoring after his retirement. “Magister”, as his students affectionately called him, passed along his love of learning and languages with a strong dose of good humor.
His family was the most cherished of his many passions. Barry's partner of thirty years, Genie Ramsdell, enjoyed a life that was transformed when he entered it, wrapping her in a world of music, intellect, tender mercies, and loving companionship. His daughter, Jesse, was his source of pride, and she basked in the glow of his love and adoration. As a grandfather, “Nunu” delighted in the creation of countless games, rituals, and meals for the pure enjoyment of his grandchildren. He will live on in their shared stories and memories.
Barry is survived by Genie; her son, Evan Kight (Sarah); a daughter, Jesse Kasnicki (Joey); three grandchildren, Branden, JJ, and Lydia; his mother, Fosca Anne; his sisters, Lori, Donna, and Karen, and seven nieces and nephews.
All who knew him will dearly miss his lively conversations and vibrant spirit. He had a magical way of making you feel truly known and seen. One of Barry's tennis buddies described him this way: A teacher's heart, the sharpest wit, a kind ear, and a mind that sees the world differently, yet clearly.
