She was born on Friday, July 13, 1928 in Sands Spring, Oklahoma, and passed peacefully at home in Austin,
TX surrounded by her immediate family. Her early life was spent in the small, west Texas farming town of Sudan, and later in Lubbock, TX.
Ann was a gifted, life-long teacher. She received her education training at Texas Tech University where she earned both a bachelors and a Masters degree in Education. Ann then earned a second masters at Stephen F. Austin in secondary education. Her teaching career began at Lubbock High School, followed by assignments at North Dallas Senior H.S., Travis Junior H.S. in Irving, Texas, and at Creekwood Middle School in Kingwood Texas. While living in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia she worked full time as an administrative specialist. Her married life began with her one and only husband George in July of 1960, moving with him to Maryland where he started his graduate degree. In 1982 George and Ann left the United States for Saudi Arabia where they lived and worked for nine happy years, which included the Kuwait war.
During her struggle with cancer Ann received excellent care from her oncologist Dr. Richard Helmer and friendly staff at Texas Oncology, where Ann always brought a smile to everyone she met. In her final days Ann was graciously treated by Hospice Austin. She is survived by her husband of 54 years who grieves for her deeply, her son John W. Safranek, a county administrator who lives in Denton, Texas with her two grandchildren, Max and Erika, and their mother Lauren, and her daughter Cynthia Crowell, a professional graphics artist who lives in Frisco, Texas.
Ann had a vibrant personality, was loved by many, and had a talent for brightening the days of others, even during her long, painful illness.
A Memorial service for Ann will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, March 22nd in St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 11819 South IH-35, Austin, TX 78747
