Alma Rosa Gonzales, born in Texas City, Texas on October 3, 1960, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023, in Austin, Texas at the age of sixty-two leaving cherished memories for her family and loved ones. Alma was loved dearly by her husband Johnny Gonzales of forty-three years, and their children, Christopher Gonzales and wife Sol-Ana, Vanessa Gonzales, and grandson Máximo Renteria Gonzales.
Alma is also survived by her mother, Virgina Velez, and siblings Leticia Velez Soliz, Silia Velez Sanchez and husband Gilbert Sanchez Jr, Alicia Velez, Rudolph Velez Jr and wife Sally, along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Alma is preceded in death by her father, Rodolfo “Popo” Velez.
Alma was a long-time resident of Alvin, Texas before moving to Austin in 1985. She dedicated her career to working for Texas Mutual Insurance Company, making significant contributions to her profession.
Her passion for travel, cooking, and shopping brought immense joy as she would embark on adventures with her beloved family and friends. Football season held a special place in her heart, as she cheered for her favorite teams including the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns, while tailgating both near and far. Alma was no stranger to the kitchen, as she effortlessly transformed any small gathering into a remarkable feast as she prepared numerous appetizers, main courses, and sides leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of enjoying her creations. Alma enjoyed shopping for her loved ones, especially her grandson and great-nieces, at many stores, but Macy’s was where you could often find her or shopping at Target with popcorn in hand.
Alma was the heart of her family, planning memorable trips, instilling a tradition of attending Houston Astros games, and helping or hosting weekend family gatherings.
Alma was an advocate for cancer awareness, as she actively participated in various fun walks, demonstrating her commitment to the cause and displaying her boundless love for others.
Her memory will forever be cherished for her kindness, humor, and vibrant energy that lit up every room she entered.
A mass in celebration of Alma’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at noon, followed by a celebration of her life at the Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home from 2:00 - 4:00 pm
