CURRIE, Ronald John - Ron passed away at Bloomington Cove on July 25, 2014 in his 87th year. Beloved husband of 59 years of Frances Menzies. Loving father of John (Denise), Anne (Reg), Paul (Christina) and Thom (Paula). Beloved grandfather of Elizabeth, Timothy, Maggie, Martha, Leeanna, William, Matt, Kate, Allison and Jonathan. Great-grandfather to Meadow, Jack and Rory. Lovingly remembered by his brothers Bruce (Jane) and Ian (Pixie) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents John and Hilda Currie and by his brother David Currie.
Ron graduated from University of Toronto and began his 34 year career with IBM in May 1950. Ron had the opportunity to travel the world with IBM – from IBM Canada to IBM Europe/Middle-East/Africa to IBM Americas/Far East and IBM Corporation. He and his family traveled from Toronto to Paris to New York and then back to Paris before returning to Canada in 1982. He had a very distinguished career and was the first Canadian to become Group Executive Vice President in Europe. When Ron wasn’t traveling on business, he obtained his private pilot’s license and would fly from Irvington, NY to the cottage at Three Mile Lake in the Almaguin Highlands. Ron was a competitive curler and twice represented New York State at the US Men’s Curling Open. Among his many hobbies, Ron was an award-winning photographer. He was a painter and carved in several medium, including wood, soapstone and clay.
Ron enjoyed being with his family and enjoyed hosting the annual Currie Family Christmas Party in Stouffville.
Friends may call at the Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South (northeast corner of Industrial Pkwy. and Yonge) Aurora, 905-727-5421 on Monday July 28 from 2-4 and 7-9pm and on Tuesday July 29 from 10-11am. Service will follow in the chapel at 11am. In memory of Ron, donations to The Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.
