It is with deep sadness that we mourn the peaceful passing of our mother Joy Vaughan at the age of 93 after a decade long battle with kidney failure and congestive heart disease. She is survived by her children David Vaughan, wife Carol Anne, grandsons Brandon and Andrew, and her daughter Sandra Vaughan and partner Che Campbell. Her husband of 60+ years, Peter Vaughan, passed away Easter Weekend 2021 after a long battle with cancer.
Joy was born in England in 1930 to Fred and Eva Howard. She, along with her older sister Margie grew up during World War II, and recounted numerous stories of the horrors of war. At the age of 14, she graduated from secretary school and embarked on a long career as a legal secretary in England and in Canada.
In 1957, she and two friends set out for a year long stay in Canada. Their plan was to find employment so they could save and travel Canada and the US. They began by living and working in Toronto before moving to Vancouver where she eventually met her husband, Peter. They were married in England in 1960 and decided to build their lives in Canada.
They lived in Vancouver for a couple of years before Peter’s company transferred him to Ontario. They moved many times due to Peter’s job including; Oakville, Sudbury, St. Catharines, Fonthill, Effingham, Milton, Hornby, and then settling in Ballantrae after retirement. Each time they moved Joy would find a new job as a legal secretary and then eventually a position within the local courthouse.
Joy managed to work here way into the courthouse as a Court Registrar in Welland, which up to that point had solely been reserved for men. She was passionate about the field of law her entire life and was very excited and proud to hold the position of a Court Registrar. Unfortunately, the mandatory retirement age of 65 forced her to leave the position she loved.
Joy loved ballroom dancing which was what drew her to our father who was an exceptional dancer. She is fondly remembered for her gregarious nature and her penchant for telling jokes. She was an avid Coronation Street fan and could not get enough of the Royal family. She recounted details of the death of King George and the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth like it was yesterday.
Joy lived a long and happy life despite all the ailments she was battling. She will be missed.
A visitation for Joy will be held Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, ON L4G6W8.
A small, private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ThompsonFH-Aurora.com for the Vaughan family.
