My sincere condolences to Gary's family.
I attended SAC from 1964 to 1969. I thoroughly enjoyed my years at St Andrew's but my first year was almost an academic disaster. I struggled for the first two semesters but prior to the third semester Gary was assigned to be my tutor. As I recall, in those days we all had tutors. With Gary's support and encouragement I was able to turn things around and was promoted 'on probation' to grade 10. I have always felt fortunate that Gary was in my corner and helped me make the changes that allowed me to get through that difficult year.

Very sorry to read of Gary’s passing. Gary was always one of my favourite teachers to work with during my time at St. Andrew’s.  Every Christmas he would come around with his bag of chocolate oranges (one of my favourites) for all the staff. Always a smile and a pleasant conversation.

Gary was one of the best teachers at SAC during my 5 years from 1964 to 1969.  I will never forget how impressed our 9A science class    was when he  would write a sentence on the blackboard using both hands simultaneously.  Talk about athleticism!  He was a very intelligent man of true character who truly cared about the students.    My memory of him helped me in my 35 year teaching career.  Thanks Gary!

My condolences to Wilma West and her family. I have wonderful memories of Mr. West. I spent seven years of my childhood at St. Andrew’s as my father was a teacher and Housemaster at Flavelle.  When ‘The Boys’ were not in residence, due to Christmas holidays or the summer break, the children of teachers who lived on campus, would consult each other about which teacher could be persuaded to get the pool key and take us for a swim.   We would knock on doors and plead to be taken to the pool.  My father would sometimes oblige, but Mr. West consistently caved in to our pestering.  Of all the teachers who took us, he seemed to enjoy it the most and we would scream with delight each time he would say, ‘Okay!! Another ten minutes!’  It was obsolete heaven to have the pool to ourselves! Thank you, Mr. West.

So sorry to learn of Gary's passing.  I had the pleasure of his guidance and influence for 5 years at St Andrew's.  Gary had an innate ability to get the best out of the boys.....he did it in a nurturing way.....I never heard him once raise his voice (although he probably should have) always preferring the calm rational approach to problem solving. He led by example displaying on a daily basis decency, poise and dignity..... which generations of Andreans took with them into their adult life.

Wishing my heartfelt best to the family. It's been many years since Gary mentored me obviously, but he was fair and helped guide me when I was young at SAC and appreciated his vision for the bigger picture. Young 18 yr olds don't always see the forrest thru the trees. But Gary had a consistent calm approach with me. I actually thought of him not knowing this news prior to Christmas. I hope for the family to know his positive impact. Scott McCargar '85.

I am from the class of 80 at St. Andrew's. Gary was prominent in the years i was there.

I remember he could kick a football a mile. He was tough on us when we really needed discipline and sometimes we really needed it!

The last time i saw him was at one of the reunion dinners and he was helping a very frail Stan "the man" McFarlan around. I saw a kind, gentle man in Gary that night.

Many fond memories had on Georgian Bay and the dock at Ojibway! Everyone looked forward to Misty Morn  tying up. The camaraderie and fun we had with Wilma and Gary was very special. Our condolences to Wilma and family.

I want  to express my heart felt condolences to my friend Wilma, and to the entire West family.
I had the privilege of knowing Gery as a friend, and classmate since 1959, when we were both at Queens, and we were involved in  physical education, hockey,  and football.
Wherever Gary is now I am certain he is already trying to teach “fellow residents” how to do the giant swing on a high bar.
Gary was an all sport athlete, a very talented gentleman, and a superb life partner for Wilma.
Gary and I are the same age, and I am feeling a deep sadness because of his passing.

Gary lit up a room with his smile. He was hired as Athletic Director in the fall of 1963, and coached football, basketball and any other sport that needed his expertise at St. Andrew’s College.
He was a kind and patient leader who will be missed by many hundreds, if not thousands of students.
To his wife Wilma and children Lynda, Bruce and Rachel and their families we offer our deepest sympathy.
