Colum Patrick Whelan, passed away peacefully, at age 92, at Southlake Regional Health Centre on Friday, December 13, 2024. Collie is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Rita (nee Vanderploeg), his children Richard (Sylvie), Paul (Cynthia), Pauline, Marla (Scott) and grandchildren Bridget (Mike), Sinead (Sean), Peter, Carmen, Madeleine (Phil) and Benjamin as well as great grandchild Desmond. Colum is also survived by his sister Maureen, in laws Peter, Marlene, Kathy, Lou, Brenda and S. Louise. He is predeceased by his parents Michael Whelan and Bridee (nee Flannnery), sisters Monica, Theresa, brothers Liam, Aiden, Desmond and Michael. Collie had an active life growing up in Alliston, excelling at hockey and lacrosse. He went on to a successful lifelong career as a food inspector / head supervisor for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. In retirement, he pursued golf and curling. He was active in his Catholic parish and Knights of Columbus. He kept his mind sharp through reading current events, novels and the daily crossword which he never missed. He leaves a big hole in the lives of all he touched. Colum will be missed but surely will receive a wide welcome in Heaven.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora. Public visitation will be held at this location on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 from 2 – 4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Parish, 15347 Yonge Street, Aurora at 11 am on Thursday. Please join the family for a reception following the Mass at Aurora Soccer Club, 510 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora (just east of Thompson Funeral Home) until 2:30 p.m. when the family will be leaving for a private burial at St. John Cemetery in Newmarket.
