Lucille W. Whittle Hancock

Mrs. Hancock was born in Saint Clair, GA and grew up in Blythe, GA. She graduated from Blythe High School in 1933 and was the class Valedictorian. She then attended the University of Georgia.

Mrs. Hancock married her childhood sweetheart, James Thomas Hancock on January 15, 1933. This marriage lasted for fifty-four years and only ended upon the death of her husband. She followed her husband to Washington D.C. during World War II when he was stationed at the Washington Naval Yard. She told of stories of the VE Day celebration and the parade for General Eisenhower at the end of the war. In the 1950's she worked in the children's department at Davison's in downtown Augusta. One of her customers was First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. In the 1960's she went to work for Westover Cemetery in sales. She became the Office Manager before her retirement in 1981. While at Westover she was instrumental in the construction of the large stone cross where Sunrise services are held every Easter Sunday. She looked forward to the Master's tournament every year. Not to attend the tournament, but to have patrons park in her yard. She enjoyed being a gracious host and inviting all who parked in her yard into her home. And because of this, the same patrons became friends and would come back to visit with her year after year. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchild.

Mrs. Hancock has been a faithful member of the Hebron Fellowship Community, which seeks to rehabilitate substance abusers through the love of Christ, since 1964. She has been a pillar of support for Angel's Touch Ministries, which help families cope with the loss of a child, since she lost her own daughter in 1997. She has been a member of St. Mark UMC since 1951 and was a faithful member of Faith Discusion Sunday School class.

Mrs. Hancock was preceded in death by her daughter, Lynne Hancock Smith. She is survived by her sister, Coradelle Whittle. She is also survived by her son, James Thomas (Jay) Hancock III. She is survived by six grandchildren, Mark H. Symms, Amy L. Symms, Jon D. Grice, Katie Hancock, Jamie Hancock, and Jim Hancock. She is survived by five great grandchildren, Dayna Symms, Baylie Symms, Taylor Grice, Jacob Sale and Elias Sale, and by one great great grandchild, Ayden Smith.

Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Hancock on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 11am at Saint Mark's United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour before the service and after the service at the church. Internment will be private. Honorary pallbearers will be the Faith Discusion Sunday School class.
