Jane married Luther Minter Thomas, Jr. on August 30, 1957 (which, she often reminded us, was the hottest day of the year). The couple lived in Richmond, Virginia during Luther’s residency. After he completed his residency they spent four years in the Panama Canal Zone, then returned to the area in 1963 making Augusta their home.
Being a native of Augusta, Mrs. Thomas attended William Robinson Elementary School, graduated from the Academy of Richmond County and attended Mercer University. She was a member of the Richmond County Medical Alliance, was an active member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church and the ACS Sunday School Class.
Jane was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and best friend to many. She was a lover of life, laughter, people, Augusta history, interior design and chocolate. She was a model of love and grace to her family and all those who knew her.
Jane is survived by her husband, Dr. Luther M. Thomas, Jr., of Augusta; one son, Dr. Luther M. Thomas III, of Martinez; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Jane and Dennis L. Finch of Evans and Susan Thomas and David C. Nutter of Atlanta; two sisters and brother-in-law, Sarah Holman and William A. Hancock and Emily Eubanks both of Augusta; nine precious grandchildren, Kathy and Sarah Thomas, Michael and John Jimenez, Jane, Jim, Nancy, Ann Marie and Laura Lillian Nutter; and two step-grandchildren, Chelsea L. and Dakota L. Finch.
Memorial Services will be held 11 AM, Friday, February 12, 2010 at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, with Dr. Dan Brown and Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, Nehemiah Fund, 1330 Monte Sano Avenue, Augusta, Georgia 30904.
