Augusta, GA- Allen Edward Isdell, Sr., 89, entered into rest on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at his residence. Allen , a native of Augusta, served our country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942-1945, seeing duty in both the European Theatre and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He received several medals while serving in World War II including six different bronze stars, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and a Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Allen has been involved in his community and profession since returning to Augusta. He began his career with Orkin Exterminating in 1946. For 26 years he was involved with the expansion of Orkin into the northern states. He served in many capacities during this period including District Service Manager in Tennessee and Georgia. In 1972 he returned home to Augusta and opened A&R Exterminating Company. The initials in the company name – “A&R”- stands for his two sons, Allen Jr. and Richard. He served as Grand Marshall for the GPCA winter conference in Athens in January 2007, where he was presented an engraved rocking chair. In his honor, the mayor of Augusta has named September 9, 1995, as Allen Edward Isdell Sr. Day. He was appointed an Honorary Assistant to Commissioner Thomas Irvin in 2006. Allen has had a long and active role with the Georgia Pest Control Association. He was President in 1995-96. During this growth period Allen provided the stability and guidance needed to balance a building program, hiring a full-time lobbyist and helping the Association work on its member integrity and ethics. He was made an Honorary Member in 1999. Allen was appointed to the Georgia Structural Pest Control Commission for a three-year term in 2000. Allen has also been active and honored by the CSRA Professional Pest Control Association. He served as President in 1992-93. In 2002, he was named Pest Control Operator of the year and in September of 2004, he was recognized as the first honorary member of this Association. In 2009 the Association named a scholarship fund after him and Mr. Wheeler Buff. Allen was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, Augusta. His other memberships include Fleming Masonic Lodge #718 F & AM, the Alice Warren Chapter 483 Order of the Eastern Star, Georgia Pest Control Association, South Carolina Pest Control Association, and the CSRA Professional Pest Control Association, Augusta- Richmond County Committee for Good Government, and the Old Town Neighborhood Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and Clara Holley Isdell; siblings, Walter Isdell, Vernon Isdell, Carl Isdell, Hubert (Bill) Isdell, Herbert (Jake) Isdell, and Ann Isdell Jahnke.
Allen is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edna H. Isdell; daughters, Anne Isdell (Charles)Bell of Augusta and Sherry Hill of Decatur, GA; sons, Allen E. Isdell, Jr. of Edgefield, SC, and Richard G. (Vicki)Isdell of Augusta, GA; grandchildren, Melissa Morris Jones, Glenn Bell, Jeff Bell, Allen E. Isdell III, Amanda Isdell Trotter, Jennifer Isdell, Rachel Gail Isdell, and Alexis Norton; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Whitaker; and a brother, Charles O. Isdell.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2011 at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Dr. Gordon Robinson officiating. Mr. Isdell will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park with Military Honors and Masonic Rites. Pallbearers will be Bubba Nolan, Mark Hunter, Ralph Sanford, Tom Diederich, Eli Wright, and Paul Jury.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
