Angelina was born on August 20, 1922 and raised on the lower East Side of Manhattan and enlisted as an Apprentice Seaman on June 29, 1943 in New York and served satisfactorily during WWII on Naval duty from June 29, 1943 to September 28, 1945.
She began her boot training at the United States Naval Training Station at Hunter College, New York, and Angelina remembers that the late former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt came to observe the women marching in service. After boot training, Angelina was then requested to choose between Naval Bases in Hawaii, Texas, or Philadelphia where she selected Philadelphia to be closer to her New York family. She was then assigned to the United States Naval Air Station facility Anacostia, Washington, DC. She attended Hospital Corpsman School for 14 weeks at Bethesda Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and then completed her final service duty at United States Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Angelina's responsibilities included giving injections, assisting in bandaging amputees and occasionally servicing the blind and psychiatric patients which included high ranking officials to petty officers. Her rating at discharge was Pharmacist Mate, VlO, USNR and her monthly rate of pay at that time was $78.00 when she was honorably discharged in 1945. Today in 2024, a rate of pay for a Petty Officer 3rd class averages over $78,000/year.
Angelina married US Navy Petty Officer Peter Joseph Kosinski in December 1944 at a Chapel at Philadelphia Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After their military service was completed, they settled in Middlesex, NJ and raised 4 children - Robert, Barbara, Diane, and Patricia. The couple eventually divorced and Angelina went on to work different clerical administrative positions, the last being at the US Postal Service in Piscataway, NJ for 15 years where she retired in 1985. She then moved from New Jersey to El Paso, Texas and met her late husband Andres E. Carrillo who was a retired US Navy Reserve Chief Petty Officer. They remained married for a total of 34 years whereby the last 23 years of marriage they settled in Auburndale, Florida. Reaching 102 years of age this August 2024, Angelina has spent her lifetime loving her family by military style "tough love"!!!
