Maud Dorothy (Schubert) Gilbert, born on October 11, 1920 in Ballard, Washington passed away on May 23, 2010 Federal Way Washington at the age of 89. She was a 52 year resident of Auburn, Washington. She was a builder of ships as a journeyman welder working on the construction of the submarine tender USS Yellowstone in Tod Ship Yards, and a riveter on B-24 bombers during WWII. Before the start of WWII she helped pass a scroll to obtain the signature of the sailors and officers of the Battleship USS Arizona during a farewell dinner at the Navy Craven Center in Bremerton, Wash. She retired from Boeing as a shop clerk after 30 years of loyal service and later awarded the 50 year union pin from the Aerospace Union.
Dorothy was raised in Ballard, Washington and attended Saint Alphonsus School until she dropped out to help support her family during the depression. She obtained her GED in the 60’s. She was the last surviving member of her family of four siblings. She was married to Warren Gilbert who was born in Kirkland in 1919 and died in 1991. She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Franzie and Mike Hayes of Federal way, Archie of Auburn, Warren “Rick” of Auburn, Patty and Jack Hale of Anthem, Arizona, Dorothy Jacobson of Enumclaw, and Charles and Debbie Gilbert of Poland Ohio. She leaves 8 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
Dorothy was caring, generous and loyal to her family whom will miss her dearly. She was always protective and loyal to her children. She believed in the rights of all people and fiercely defended the American Flag. She enjoyed reading, gardening, crafts, and watching Mariners baseball. Dorothy could be heard often reciting old patriotic poetry learned in School. One of her fondest memories was hiking with her cousin Barney on Hurricane Ridge.
A memorial Service for Dorothy will be held on Friday, May 28, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Price-Helton Funeral Home located at 702 Auburn Way N, Auburn, Washington. Arrangements under the direction of Price-Helton Funeral home, Auburn, WA.
