Mrs. Emily Mixon Finley Pentecost, age 76 of Altoona died August 28, 2018. Her funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. on Sunday September 2nd, 2018 Morgan Funeral Chapel in Attalla with Pastor Jason Ellen officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. prior to the service in the chapel at 3. Graveside service will follow on Saturday September 8th, 2018 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, Georgia. Mrs. Pentecost, a native of Augusta in Richmond County Georgia was born November 18, 1941 to Wade Neely Mixon and Marie Hadden Mixon. She accepted Christ as her Savior in 1952 at Gracewood Baptist Church. Mrs. Pentecost graduated with high honors from The Academy of Richmond County in 1959. She became a member of Glendale Baptist Church (later Landmark Church) in 1965 and was involved in every aspect of its ministry for twenty-two years. For nineteen of those years she worked with pastor Rev. J. Durward Walker as the church and pastors secretary. She taught from toddler to senior adults in Sunday School, taught in Vacation Bible School and Children’s Church, was involved in organizing and conducting youth camps and was a member of the Sonshine Clowns. Mrs. Pentecost moved to Etowah County, Alabama in 1987. She then enrolled at Gadsden State Community College, where she was a member of the Alpha Beta Gamma National Honor Society and graduated magna cum laude with an associate’s degree as one of GSCC’s first paralegal graduates in 1991. After graduation, Mrs. Pentecost worked for three and a half years for a law firm in Gadsden. Mrs. Pentecost was a member of The Church at Will Creek (formerly CrossPoint) in Gadsden. Mrs. Pentecost’s hobbies included needlework, cooking and gardening. But her most avid, and rewarding hobby was genealogy. She was treasurer for the Etowah County Heritage Book Committee, which donated sixty-seven “Alabama Heritage” books to the Gadsden Public Library. She was a product of her Earthly father’s instruction, “A day in which you have not learned something new is a wasted day” and her Heavenly Father’s instruction, “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord…” and “Count it all joy.”
Mrs. Pentecost was preceded in death by her former husband, James Philip Finley; her parents; half-brother, John Thomas Mixon; half-sister, Helen Mixon Archer; step-father, Thomas A. Ray; step-brother, Bobby Joe Ray; brother, Jim Mixon; and step-grandson, Ryan Holt.
She is survived by her husband, Dwight Robert Pentecost of Altoona; her son, Scott (Jeanne) Finley of Augusta, GA; her son, Keith (Trina) Finley of Harlem, GA; granddaughter, Rachel (Richard) Stripling of Graniteville, SC; granddaughter, Jessica Finley of Grovetown, GA; great-grandsons, Tyson Abrams and Logan Stripling of Beech Island, SC; great-granddaughters, Kaylee and Kinsey Stripling of Beech Island, SC; step-sons, Derek Pentecost and Dana Pentecost, both of Alabama.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers; Richard Stripling, Wade Mixon, Brian Mixon, Chase Mixon, and Tristan Mixon.
