Roger Webster

Bucky graduated high school from the Darlington School in Rome, GA and college from the University of Georgia in Athens. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and served in the United States Army. As a lifelong Georgia Bulldog fan, few people knew he played football for Georgia Tech before transferring to UGA. Despite his brief stint at Georgia Tech, Bucky was a Bulldog through and through. He even named his pets after UGA athletes and his bulldog, Moonpie, once modeled as the Georgia mascot “Uga” in the 1980’s.

Bucky met Betty at the University of Georgia and they were happily married for 58 years. They made lifelong friends everywhere they lived. They were very active and loved nothing more than running and playing tennis with friends, but the beer afterwards was always his favorite part. Bucky was a gregarious man who had an easy laugh, always had a smile on his face, and loved being with friends and family.

Bucky’s career began in Nashville, TN with American Hospital Supply before moving to New York City and then Atlanta with Kidder Peabody and Solomon Brothers. He gave up life on Wall Street to buy the Lavista Ace Hardware store and spend more time with his family, though he loved picking stocks until the end of his life. He finished his career as a realtor with Caldwell Bankers in Monroe and Harry Norman in Atlanta.

Bucky loved the state of Georgia and thought its mountains were just as pretty as any other in the world. He rarely felt the need to travel outside state lines unless it was to go to his beloved Monteagle Sunday School Assembly summer home.

Bucky enjoyed being a member of Christ Church in Atlanta. Prior to that, he was an active member of North Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he was a Deacon and hosted bible study in his home. His Bible was well worn, his favorite story was of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 and he could often be heard humming or whistling hymns.

He is survived and dearly loved by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Elkin “Betty” Webster and three children Susan (David) Parker of Atlanta, GA, Dr. John (Eliza) Webster III of Durango, CO and Sharon (Clark) Tate of Atlanta, GA; and nine grandchildren Henry, Ellie and Annie Parker; Rush, Havens and Sunny Webster; and Albert, Emmaline and Campbell Tate.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church on Sunday, July 24 at 1:00 p.m. The church meets in the International School at 2890 North Fulton Drive, Atlanta, GA 30305. A reception for friends and family will follow immediately after the service.
