Stan was born December 6th, 1927, in Greensboro, NC, died September 23rd, 2018, Atlanta, GA. The quintessential Southern gentleman, Stan was humble and smart, had a quick wit, and was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He was beloved by all. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in June 1945 and immediately enlisted in the Navy at age 17, as war was winding down. He served almost a year, and was discharged July 1946.
Stan entered the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in September 1946. He graduated in May 1951 with a B.S. in Commerce. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and the Order of Gimghoul serving as Rex his senior year. He was also on the track team his sophomore and junior year. Stan later served on the Board of Visitors. In 1951, he was called back in the Navy for over two years during the Korean War. He served on the USS Shelikof, which the officers on board called “the Russian Mistake.”
Stan spent his entire career in the textile business with Cone Mills, Klopman, Knit/away, and Burlington Industries.
He was a member of Piedmont Driving Club and Highlands Country Club. Stan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Hobby Travis. He is also survived by his four daughters, Ann Travis Davis (Jack), Allen Travis Dorsey (Jeff), Dotsie Travis Bohan (Richard), and Emily Travis Olsen (Eric), and known as “G-Daddy” by his grandchildren, Travis Dorsey, Emily Dorsey Drew (Sam), Liza Dorsey, and PFC Joe Dorsey, Allie and Bridget Bohan, Elizabeth and Catherine Olsen, Mark Olsen (Kate), and Joanna Olsen Higgins (Sam). As well as his great grandson, Henry Drew. Pre deceased by his parents, Eva Allen Stainback, of Weldon, NC and Richard Stanford Travis Jr., of Scotland Neck, NC., his sister and brother in law Eva Allen and Riley Little and grandson Matthew Olsen.
Private family service Wednesday, September 26 at HM Patterson and Son, Spring Hill Chapel.
