Captain Paul William Mauldin Sr.

Paul William Mauldin, Sr., 87, passed away Friday, October 1, 2010. He was a retired Captain of the Atlanta Fire Department. Born May 4, 1923, Captain Mauldin graduated from Commercial High School before entering the U.S. Navy. During WWII, from 1942 to 1945, Captain Mauldin served as a Gunner’s Mate on the U.S.S. Ranger and U.S.S. Bennington Aircraft Carriers. After separation from the military, he spent nine years as a professional baseball player. He played baseball for The Nashville Vols, The Hopkinsville Hoppers, The Ottawa Giants, The Chattanooga Lookouts and The Macon Peaches before joining the Atlanta Fire Department. After retirement from the Atlanta Fire Department in 1978, Captain Mauldin assisted in forming the Fulton County Fire Department. Captain Mauldin was also active with the Glenwood Hills Little League Association, the American Legion and the Stan Musial Leagues.

Captain Mauldin was preceded in death by his wife, Wyndolin Gauntt Mauldin. He is survived by his sons: Mickey (Judy) Mauldin of Dacula and Chris (Laura) Mauldin of Alpharetta; daughter, Paula (Buster) Childrey of Suwanee; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brothers: Jim Mauldin of Franklin, Marshall and David Mauldin both of Douglasville; sister, Laura Sue Cabe; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill on Sunday, the third of October from three until five o’clock in the evening. A traditional firefighters’ funeral will be held at the funeral home on Monday, the fourth of October at one o’clock in the afternoon; interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
